diabetes type 2 and fusterated with doctors?

diabetes diet for women
Lucky asked:

i am having such a hard time with doctors. last feb i was sick and so i went to the doctor. thats when they told me i was type 2 diabetic. they put me on metformin and told me to change my diet and exercise more. no biggie. ever since that visit, i havent felt the same. i am sick ALL the time. i went to my doctor every couple of weeks. ive had tons of blood work done. the only thing they ever find in my blood work is a high white blood cell count that hasnt gone down. but they cant find the infection causing it. i have gone for a couple second opinions. i have gone to a couple women health doctors. i even saw a cancer doctor that tried to say i had leukemia. but all my tests came back good. one doctor after another and no one can find out why im always sick now. i keep getting every excuse for my symtoms. they say there from the diabetes.. the ONLY other medication i was even on was the depo birthconrol shot. i stopped that a year ago before the diabetes hoping to get pregnant for the first time. they say its stress.. work related.. and another one only lectured me on smoking. i understand smoking isnt good. but would smoking alone make me sick all the time.. cmon!! i had runs all the time. i felt bloated and nasty. i got horrible headaches. sick to my stomach. light headed and dizzy spells. low blood sugars every morning. i would even eat right before bed. i would wake up with 50’s and 60’s. i would feel really disoriented and drink orange juice or something loaded with carbs to wake up every morning. then the orange juice would bring my blood sugar up so quickly that i would get headaches. then it was an every morning ritual to take ibuprofin. i hated it. the doctor wouldnt change the meds or the doeses no matter how much i complained. i was told it will take time to get use to the meds and control the diabetes. so almost everyday it was like work bed work bed cause im always not feeling well to do anything else!!

out of fusteration, i have stopped taking all meds. for a month now. i have felt a TON better. all the stomach problems went away. i havent had any headaches. i started taking vitamins too. im not so tired anymore. i know it had to be the medication. but here is my problem now. i keep an eye on my blood sugar. but its going high now. i am trying the best i can i eat better and control it that way. but unless i eat greens 24/7 i cant. im seeing high 100’s in the mornings and mid afternoons. the highest has been 180. but on the plus side, im not going low at night. when i wake up its 90’s usually.

ugh!! i know i need to go back to the doctor or a doctor. but how do i get them to actually LISTEN to me. my insurance is terrible and i cant afford to keep jumping around doctor to doctor. im getting tired of them running tests i can not afford!!

has anyone else had this problem or can anyone offer any advice?

Sean

You definitely need to find another doctor (one who listens). It sounds like when you were first diagnosed with diabetes, they were a little too aggressive. Obviously your changes in diet have helped tremendously. To keep sugar level spikes to a minimum, read the ingredients of everything you eat. Some things, like hydrogenated oils (found in margarine, canned soups, crackers, salad dressings and lots of other places too) can really run your sugar up. Watch your fruit intake. While fruit is healthy, it is also loaded with natural sugar, as are a lot of veggies. Diet drinks can also trick your body into a sugar spike. Contact the nutritionist at your local hospital and have him/her send you diabetic diet plan. There is a wealth of information there. It is a learning process of watching how your body responds to different foods and being careful to avoid ones you know send your sugar level through the roof.

Control of diabetes is based on control of carbohydrates. That includes sugars AND starches. Starches are just slightly more complex sugars, so they effect you body in a manner similar to sugars.

It also helps to eat foods that cause you to digest slowly. Those are fibers..

    SO . . . .
ELIMINATE sugars from your diet. No sodas, energy drinks, sports drinks, candies, cookies, fruit juices, cakes, ice cream . . . .

REDUCE the amount of starches. Less bread, crackers, pastas, rice, corn, potatoes.

INCREASE the amount of fibers — green vegetablesd, whole grain breads, Cheerios.

Maintain or increase your proteins — meats, especially. Stay lean, like chicken or lean beef.

The fibers will “trap” the other foods and cause them to be digested slower. Because foods will stay in your system longer, you will tend to even out your blood sugars.

Staying away from sugars eliminates those high and lows that you get from sugars, the “roller coaster” effects.

Note, though, that more fibers does tend to increase gas and bloating.

Metformin could very well have been the problem. It caused many problems with my husband. You should go back to the doc and have him put you on something else. My husband is seeing an endochronolgist.
